Dan Barton set up his business, Dan Barton Historic Building Restoration, 14 years ago after recognising the need for his expertise in the county, for example among the half-timbered houses of south Oxfordshire.

Among his many skills are timber repairs, fine joinery, timber-framing, roofing and brickwork, and lime plastering for projects such as the exterior of Priory Cottage in Steventon, for the National Trust.

Dan Barton's passion in life is recreating exact replicas of beautiful furniture of a bygone age.

A college piece - a replica of a burr walnut William and Mary bureau, the original of which is in The Red Lodge museum, Bristol. The bureau took two years to make. It stands 9ft tall has 41 drawers, 23 hidden compartments and over 1,000 hand cut dovetails. (Picture can be seen in photo gallery )

'Daring Dan is really top drawer'

Furniture student Dan Barton embarked on an ambitious project after spotting a William and Mary bureau at the Red Lodge museum, Bristol. He decided to build a replica even though he had never made furniture before. Dan even went to the trouble of making his own tools and even nails. "I could have cheated by using manufactured wood for parts you can't see, but I decided to keep it as close to the original as possible".

Dan a student at Brunel technical college is, his tutors agree exceptionally talented. For one of the pieces he has painstakingly put together over the past two years is a copy of a William and Mary writing bureau. The piece has won him the Clarks Wood trophy in the college furniture exhibition
